Once again I was very excited for visit Professor: H class.  This time we was working on something different and I was very happy to work with someone who is a great student, well prepare and on top of her games. Although, she did her lay-out the night before she was ready to start her paper with no hassle.


However, I started the basic rules by introducing myself, with a hand shake, wonderful smile, perfect tone of voice, eye contact and stable posture to show her that I’m ready to help her fix her lay-out into a paper / essay.


First, we both started to read the lay-out that she had and while reading she started to point out her own mistake. For example, she points out a few grammatical errors and she realizes that the three main points she had for her topic sentences sound alike. On top of that, she did not do any researches or have any direct quotes to work with. Even more, she had great examples but her examples did not support her thesis or topic sentences. This is when I started to dug deeper into her essay to help her organize it.


I kept the same thesis and her examples and started to help her restate her topic sentences to connect it to her thesis. I also told her to find research that connects with her topic sentences and thesis. Finally, I told her keep your examples because it fits perfectly with the professor topic and your paper you are about to write.


Before this session end, I left her with strong thesis, 4 different ideas to start her paragraphs with and I give her a lay-out how to begging and end each paragraph. For example, topic sentences (1-2 sent), 1 evidence to support it, direct quote with proper citation, analyze the quotes (1-2 sent), give and example to support it with most details and restate the topic sentence in different words. Eventually, she started to plug her ideas into the lay-out I give and she seem very happy with it.



My final thought, I told her go to the library and do some research and give direct quotes and also give proper citation. Even more, I told her if she have any problem or feel pause while writing, follow the basic steps I showed her or go to the writing center for help. Additional, she seem very happy and I am very happy that she felt that way.

First Day of My ENG 099 Tutoring Experience

          It was amazing to work with an ENG 099 student for the first time in my tutoring session because these types of essay are totally different from the other essays I had in the past. However, I knew it’s not going to be that difficult for me, since I heard I have to work with them; for helping them prepare for the CATW Exam. I already knew what to expect from them because I was well trained in Dr. Cooper class for handle situation like this. Additional, I knew the basic concept because I took ENG 099 in the pass.  

First, when I got in the C-building in room 717 Dr. Cooper places me with my writer. I started to introduce myself, etc… and ready to get straight to business because I already know we have a limited time. Soon as I took his essay and saw “Please Revise” I already knew that my write did a bad job on his paper because he doesn’t have a letter grade. I stated by reading his professor comments firstly, so that I will have a basic idea about the paper and what to look out for. Addition, the comments states that; (1) he doesn’t have a well-developed thesis (2) need proper citation (MLA) (3) have run-on and it need more evidence. 

Secondly, we both took around 5-8 minutes to read the entire essay and while reading, I am making check marks, so I can indicate where I have to work on / make correction.  Soon ask I finished reading his paper I told him that, I will help you to make a stronger thesis to support your paper. So I ask him give me one main point/idea about each body paragraphs he wrote. I made him took all 3 strong ideas/points and make a strong thesis and now it able to support his entire essay. 

Finally, something that grabs my attention about this student is that all of his paragraphs already have a good topic sentences that’s reflect to the thesis we had made but he was lack of organization / flow throughout it. I helped him to structure his paragraphs by analyzing it in a proper organization. For example, I told him after the topic sentence, say something more, then say something about the author that connected to the topic sentences, then analyze what the author is trying to say in 2-3 sentences, then give personal examples, personal experience, back ground knowledge, anything from pass newspaper, books, news, TV and etc...; to argues your idea. Then close off the final sentences and refer it to your topic sentence or thesis in different words. 

However, we got through over 90% of the paper and he seems very happy and I told him if he has further questions please visit the writing center for helped.

PEDAGOGY of the OPPRESSED on PAULO FREIRE (ANALYZE)

Freire main concept is “The banking concept of Education” – deposing is another part of the banking.  The teacher is the bank who takes out the ideas from a reading and put those ideas on to the student then into their brains to remember.  P.72

The banking concept of education is still using in today life epically in per-school and middle school in different neighborhood. For example, in day care they still uses basic skills, teacher sitting there teaching the students and students have to lean from what they heard from the teacher. Another example, the banking concept is also use in college epically for ENG 099.  It can also apply to different subject at some point but I believe this concept is applying in more English classes.

One of Freire important idea is that wants to have critical thinking humans- which mean people don’t start off as human but they have to become human. In other word saying that human is something you become by choices, not by birth he is assuming. He also said that, our jobs are to turn people into human being, thinkers and reality, not to be a millionaire or billionaires.

Another important idea he has mention is Educations is about transforming reality- he is saying that we have to adapting how to overcome reality. This means that, students have to able to change the World, transform student who can able to adapt to the world and who lives in the word. In other words, he is saying that things shift and we have to able to live with it through reality. For example, 20 years ago things has change and we all have to adapt to it, in other word is a part of reality. Look for instance, woman rights, gay marriage, and slaves.

One of his Final important ideas is Engage yourself from liberation- he said we need to liberate our self or engage with teachers or professor and listen to their ideas. In other word their ideas is not bad or stupid and it can be useful for us to learn from it. For example he said that, gold and the purpose of education students will use it to improve they reality and liberation.

ALEC VIDEOS RESPOND

According to the video ALEC is pushing for congress for pass laws for college and university who will accepts state funding to increase budget and tuition. This act is called the College Funding Accountability Act. ALEC has lay out his statistic to state senate and congress man to prove a point that his Act will improve most college and university. This mean that all secondary school will also receive money to support them and cost of living will be affordable through the nation. Another major Act he pushes for is the Higher Education Scholarships for High School Pupils Act, this act is to help any high school students who graduate early from high school can able to get a scholarships to start college. But on the other hand, they have to be able to pass all states tested in all subjects.

These are only some of the laws he got passed by congress, he got many more law passed through congress because he is one of the largest group legislation in the country. But many of us do not know everything is funding by large corporation, who pays fees to be a part of ALEC legislation. In other word, this mean that all the people who is a part of this organization goes behind close door with politician to vote and to change the law in the U.S by using our tax money to make changes and receive all they credits. ALEC believes that everything he is doing is a new gold age for the students.

To my understanding, all these video is very shocking to see the way our school system is controlling by politicians. That makes me feel that most of the people who make the laws for the Board of Education, College and University don’t have any knowledge as a regular teacher or professor.  They just there making all these laws for teachers, students and tax payers to follow because they have the money to fund it. On the other hand, they just believe that they are doing the right thing for our next generation. I personally not against ALEC groups because I am already in the trap so I can’t do anything about it. I just have to go with the flow along with my children. If ALEC believes that, this is something good he is doing for the future children that not bad at all but his system cannot work for the future I am guessing another big corporation will come up with new ideas and laws. (MONEY RUN THINGS).

I am assuming that all teacher don’t like the ALEC laws because if they don’t get the score up on the standardized testing, regents or high graduation rate they will be scare of getting fired or the school can be close down and they will have to be unemployed or on food stamp and that can lead to terrible condition to their career or family. Look for example, in the fourth video 6 people was arrested. This mean that congress is not listed to the citizen. They just look into the large corporation to make profits off the tax payers.
