Second Day of ENG 101 Tutoring
Once again I was very excited for visit Professor: H class. This time we was working on something different and I was very happy to work with someone who is a great student, well prepare and on top of her games. Although, she did her lay-out the night before she was ready to start her paper with no hassle.
However, I started the basic rules by introducing myself, with a hand shake, wonderful smile, perfect tone of voice, eye contact and stable posture to show her that I’m ready to help her fix her lay-out into a paper / essay.
First, we both started to read the lay-out that she had and while reading she started to point out her own mistake. For example, she points out a few grammatical errors and she realizes that the three main points she had for her topic sentences sound alike. On top of that, she did not do any researches or have any direct quotes to work with. Even more, she had great examples but her examples did not support her thesis or topic sentences. This is when I started to dug deeper into her essay to help her organize it.
I kept the same thesis and her examples and started to help her restate her topic sentences to connect it to her thesis. I also told her to find research that connects with her topic sentences and thesis. Finally, I told her keep your examples because it fits perfectly with the professor topic and your paper you are about to write.
Before this session end, I left her with strong thesis, 4 different ideas to start her paragraphs with and I give her a lay-out how to begging and end each paragraph. For example, topic sentences (1-2 sent), 1 evidence to support it, direct quote with proper citation, analyze the quotes (1-2 sent), give and example to support it with most details and restate the topic sentence in different words. Eventually, she started to plug her ideas into the lay-out I give and she seem very happy with it.
My final thought, I told her go to the library and do some research and give direct quotes and also give proper citation. Even more, I told her if she have any problem or feel pause while writing, follow the basic steps I showed her or go to the writing center for help. Additional, she seem very happy and I am very happy that she felt that way.
